Where The Wild Things Are
"The longest, most eloquent graffito...AN AESTHETIC VOYAGER WHOSE HOME IS THE ROAD..." (Krakauer 179).
Inspiration or Fool
I think this quote is alluding to how Alex wanted to live his life while he was in the wilderness. The song lyrics state that he has no phone, no pets, ultimate freedom, and that he is a voyager who basically lives to be on the road. This is very true to Alex's journey through Alaska because he didn't bring anything with him but 10 pounds of rice and some other things that weren't as essential as some of the other things he could have brought with him. Personally, I don't think this is a healthy or beneficial life to live. I wouldn't want to live this kind of lifestyle. I hate being alone for too long so going as long as he did would drive me insane. I definitely think Alex is a fool because he wasn't prepared but on the other hand that's kind of the ironic lifestyle he was going for. To live in a world with nothing to distract him and nothing that he could make an excuse out of. If he had technology and ended up dying, the people that found him could have blamed him for not using his technology right. If he had brought a pet and died, people could have said that he could have eaten his pet to stay alive. Without any of this surplus of material things, he had nothing to make an excuse as to why he died other than himself or lack of preparation.

Always Think Before You Act
Where The Wild Things Are
"Personally I see nothing positive at all about Chris McCandless's lifestyle or wilderness doctrine...Entering the wilderness purposefully ill-prepared, and surviving a near-death experience does not make you a better human, it makes you damn lucky." (Krakauer 71).
Inspiration or Fool
In this quote, it is saying how Chris submergered himself into the wilderness at full speed, meaning he did not prepare for this journey at all. The only food he brought was rice. He was forced to go hunt in order to eat, he had to make a shelter of some sort for himself other than the bus, and he had to survive through the different weather patterns that he isn't used to back home. I don't think a Chris actually realized this type of adventure isn't a type that is to be taken lightly. When you plan to just throw yourself into the wild you usually pack tons of water and food, camping supplies, some basic toiletries, and some sort of knife or weapon to kill animals for when you run out of food. I believe that Chris just wanted to get away from all the major sources of stress in his life and didn't stop to think, "Hey, maybe this isn't the best idea". Personally in my opinion I think he is a fool just for the fact that he did not prepare himself to be successful out in the wild, it's like he wanted to die out there by himself.

Families Aren't Always Perfect
Post Title: Where The Wild Things Are
"In truth McCandless had been raised...and six half-brothers and sisters from Walt's first marriage." (Krakauer 19-20).
Topic: The Dynamics of Family
In this excerpt, we read about how Alex's family and his upbringing had led him down the path of aloneness. His family was apart of the upper-middle class. His father, Walt, worked for NASA and designed radar systems for space shuttles. He had seven siblings, one younger sister, Carine, who was blood-related to him, and six half-siblings from his father's previous marriage. Growing up with a father with a pretty high paying job, parents fighting all the time, and brothers and sisters you don't see very often could make you not want to be around all the "drama" as you were grow up. If I were in Alex's situation, I know I wouldn't want to be surrounded by negativity all the time. I would separate myself from all the unfavorable aspects of my family. The only ray of sunshine in his life was his sister Carine. They were so close and I bet he didn't want to leave her behind but he felt the need to be completely isolated from everyone, particularly his family.
